US Open 2005 draw released

The draw for the 4th and final Grand Slam of the year at the US Open has been released and Maria Sharapova is top seed for the first time at a Grand Slam.

In the 1st round Maria will play Eleni Daniilidou of Greece, Maria has played Daniilidou twice before and leads the series 2-0, with the last win being in Birmingham on grass in June. If Maria can get past Daniilidou she will play either Dally Randriantefy of Madagascar or Mary Gambale of the United States, Maria hasn't played either player before. The first seed that Maria can meet is #28 Flavia Pennetta of Italy in the third round, Maria is seeded to meet Alicia Molik of Australia in the 4th round, defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia in the quarters, Kim Clijsters of Belgium in the semis and Lindsay Davenport of the United States in the final. Last year Maria reached the 3rd round here losing to Mary Pierce and was her best performance here in only 2 appearances. Maria has 92 points to defend.


Daniela Hantuchova is seeded 20. In the 1st round Danka will play Camille Pin of France. This is Camille's 2nd time here in the US Open, unseeded, she never reached the 2nd round last year so hopefully Danka will win. The first seed that Danka can meet is #25 Francesca Schiavone of Italy in the third round. Good luck Danka!

Elena Dementieva is seeded 6. In the 1st round Elena will play Lucie Safarova of Czech Republic. This is Safarova's first US Open, unseeded. The first seed that Elena can meet is #3 Amelie Mauresmo of France in the third round. Good luck Elena!

No suprise that Rodger Federer is top seed. In the 1st round Roger will play Ivo Minar of the Czech Republic. The first seed that Roger can meet is #27 Olivier Rochus of Belgium in the 4th round.
